? This position supports the John Muir NHS, Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front NHP, Eugene O'Neill NHS, and Port Chicago Naval Magazine NM of the National Park Service and may be performed remotely. ? The NPS Experienced Services Program is a unique partnership created to help solve the workforce issues facing government agencies. The program connects experienced workers (age 55+) to the NPS to provide scientific, technical, and administrative support. ? NPS ESP positions are meant to provide temporary, project-based support. This position is currently funded for an estimate of 14 weeks. ? A background security investigation may be required prior to the start date. Only those positions with 30+ hours per week are eligible for health insurance benefits; all positions will accrue sick leave. ? The experienced workers participating in the Program are referred to as ?Enrollees? and are not employees of the NPS or NEW Solutions. NEW Solutions is the ESP non-governmental organization responsible for administrative aspects of the program, and the Enrollees work under NPS direction to assist the Agency staff in carrying out their mission. NPS ESP Enrollees benefit from the opportunity to keep technical skills current; to access new training opportunities; to engage in gainful project-based positions; and to undertake meaningful tasks using their experience and talent to contribute to the environment, the national economy, and their own financial security.

Qualifications:

Minimum of 20 year(s) of experience in Restoration ecology OR MA/MS Degree in Hydrology, geomorphology, landscape ecology, restoration ecology

  • Highly knowledgeable in hydrology, geomorphology, and native vegetation in the California Bay Area. Extensive experience with developing and implementing watershed restoration projects, especially in urban areas. Strong skills in communication and interpersonal relations. Familiarity with community volunteer groups. Ability to hike on steep and uneven terrain in variable weather.
  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, Power Point
Duties:

Enrollee serves as a Restoration Ecologist for John Muir National Historic Site in Martinez, CA under the direction of the Resource Management and Planning Lead and Natural Resource Specialist and is responsible for developing a broad strategy to restore the Strentzel Creek watershed, including floodplain.

  • Assists the park in establishing a list of goals specific to enhancing the ecological function of the Strentzel Creek watershed and floodplain. Goals will articulate desired results in more precise language than currently used in the Environmental Assessment for Mt. Wanda Plan and could include sedimentation loads, native vegetation, levee removal, etc.   20%
  • Analyzes data and leverages information the park currently has available, including hydrology and geomorphology reports, and identifies data gaps necessary to meet restoration goals.   30%
  • Identifies specific restoration actions with a phased approach to implementation. Proposed actions should include design, methods, budget, timing, and identify potential contractors/park partners.   40%
  • Identifies any immediate actions that current staffing or community volunteers could begin implementing immediately.   10%

  • Rental cars: Possibly - Approximately 3 trips with 4 days of car rental each.
  • Health and Safety Considerations: Review of appropriate Job Hazard Analyses for hiking and fieldwork.
  • Required Safety Gear: Enrollee should have PPE such as work boots and protective clothing, a radio will be provided for fieldwork.

  • Physical requirements: Work is generally performed in an office setting, with occasional field work involving moderate risks including inclement weather, steep and uneven terrain, poison oak, and other common hazards found in natural environments.
  • Remote work arrangements are available for this position.
