? This position supports the Pacific West Regional Office of the National Park Service and may be performed remotely. ? The NPS Experienced Services Program is a unique partnership created to help solve the workforce issues facing government agencies. The program connects experienced workers (age 55+) to the NPS to provide scientific, technical, and administrative support. ? NPS ESP positions are meant to provide temporary, project-based support. This position is currently funded for an estimate of 10 weeks. ? A background security investigation may be required prior to the start date. Only those positions with 30+ hours per week are eligible for health insurance benefits; all positions will accrue sick leave. ? The experienced workers participating in the Program are referred to as ?Enrollees? and are not employees of the NPS or NEW Solutions. NEW Solutions is the ESP non-governmental organization responsible for administrative aspects of the program, and the Enrollees work under NPS direction to assist the Agency staff in carrying out their mission. NPS ESP Enrollees benefit from the opportunity to keep technical skills current; to access new training opportunities; to engage in gainful project-based positions; and to undertake meaningful tasks using their experience and talent to contribute to the environment, the national economy, and their own financial security.

Qualifications:

Minimum of 10 year(s) of experience in wildland fire fighting or fire planning OR BA/BS Degree in ecology, forestry, fire, professional writing, geography or related

  • Prior firefighting experience; knowledge of interagency wildland fire operations, fuels management, fire ecology, fire behavior, fire hazard and risk analysis, smoke management techniques, and meteorology. Knowledge of NPS policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements covering land use and fire management. Knowledge of NPS fire program management goals and objectives, and knowledge of interagency standards for fire and fire aviation operations.
  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel
  • MS Teams, Outlook, SharePoint
Duties:

Provide professional guidance and expertise to address wildland fire planning needs throughout parks in the Pacific West Region; specifically, supporting the revision of fire management plans per the A-123 FMP Audit.

  • Coordinate with NPS Region Fire Planners to determine deficiencies related to format, policy, guidance, and A-123 FMP Audit results for individual program Fire Management Plans. Revise Fire Management Plans utilizing a standard NPS template, working with park Fire Management Officers and other staff to provide content and review drafts. Bi-weekly calls with parks may be required at times to ensure progress. File sharing will be required through MS Teams/Sharepoint (enrollee will be added as a guest).   60%
  • Develop and revise required appendices to Fire Management Plans, including preparedness plans, step up and staffing plans, initial response plans, and fire danger operating plans, in coordination with park staff. Coordinate with NPS PWR fire planners for technical assistance needs.   30%
  • Develop or review standard map products, as directed by Region Fire Planners. Coordinate with PWR Fire Planners and PWR GIS specialist on technical assistance needs for FMP map products.   10%

  • Required Safety Gear: Some enrollees may require a field visit to park for specific projects; if so, hardhats will be required for any field visits in forested locations, and will be provided by NPS Fire Management Officer or designated fire staff.
  • Physical requirements: This is a computer-based position that will require multiple hours of sitting/standing and editing documents, and participating in MS Teams video calls. Some candidates may be required to travel to make a site visit dependent on the specific park and fire program needs. Site visit may include walking off-trail in uneven terrain for short periods of time (<1 hour), and riding in vehicles for extended periods.
