This is a virtual position. Remote and telework allowed. Follow Forest Service Remote and Telework Policy. Duty Stations/Remote Options will be determined by candidate pool but must be within the Southwestern Region- Arizona and New Mexico.

Qualifications:

Minimum of 20 year(s) of experience OR BA/BS Degree in Agriculture, natural resources, agronomy or related field of study.

  • Extensive knowledge of professional landscape architecture principles and concepts as applied to Forest activities and public service. Including visual and scenery management recreation planning and management, and natural resource management Knowledge of Forest Service policy and procedure, Forest land management plan, and manuals sufficient to effectively plan and implement the landscape architecture program and provide advice for multiple-use management decisions. Experience and skill with design, and architectural drawing.
  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, Power Point
  • Architectural Drawing, hand or AutoCAD, Sketchup, etc.; Operation of government and personal vehicles; Travel where appropriate.
Duties:

Assist and advise the USDA Forest Service Southwestern Region Regional Office and 11 National Forests across the region with recreation planning and professional landscape architecture services in support of projects for the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA). Mentor and advise other Landscape Architects (LA) and other personnel GAOA mission support staff.

  • Mentors/trains landscape Architect (LA) GAOA mission support employees in the preparation of master plans, design narratives, site development plans, and contract documents.   30%
  • Participates and assists in planning and design of a variety of moderately to highly complex recreational facilities.   25%
  • Works with engineering and other staff to develop contract packages for recreation construction projects, prepare quantity and cost estimates.   25%
  • Provides professional landscape architectural and recreation planning advice to units for scenery management, recreation opportunity spectrum, site analyses, complex recreation planning needs, and other related resource needs.   20%

Other:
  • Forest Service administrative training to maintain computer and database access.
  • Travel Requirements: Travel for project site visits, meetings, etc., including use of government or personal vehicles for commuting and official business.
  • Overnight travel: To be determined by individual project needs.
  • Air travel anticipated: To be determined by individual project needs.
  • Rental cars: To be determined by individual project needs and unavailability of government vehicles or personal vehicle use.
  • Health and Safety Considerations: General field hazards encountered on-site visits; training through job hazard and risk analysis, discussions, etc.
  • Required Safety Gear: Field going gear, including hiking boots, weather appropriate clothing, hard hats, safety vest, and gloves on occasion.
  • Safety Gear Use: Hard hats and safety goggles may be required if visitation to an under-construction field site is needed. Work is performed in both the office setting and field environment. Work in the office is conducted where there is adequate light, heat, and ventilation. Office work often includes sitting at a desk for several hours. Work in the field requires occasional exposure to conditions in remote areas requiring long travel days, roads, and facilities that are under construction. Conditions during site visits may involve exposure to dust, steep terrain, uneven surfaces, precipitation, temperature and weather extremes, and deteriorated conditions where health and safety measures will be necessary. Other fieldwork hazards include risk of injury from falls, strains, striking against brush and overhanging branches, and occasional exposure to inclement weather such as rain, cold, and heat
  • Physical requirements: The work is predominately sedentary including extensive sitting but does include physical activity and exertion, such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, rocky, or slippery surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, climbing, or similar activities; recurring lifting of light to moderately heavy items weighing less than 50 pounds; and operation of government and personal vehicles.
